How Is Medical Silicone Used?
Medical silicone has a number of uses, both inside of the hospital as well as outside. We use silicone-based products on a daily basis without ever realizing it. However, without this man-made material it would be very difficult to get certain things done, especially in the medical industry.
At home, we use silicone for medical purposes—mainly when it comes to treating wounds and small scrapes. Even the medical dressings we use, such as gauze, are treated with gel silicone.
In hospitals, clinics and other medical facilities, medical silicone plays an even larger part of the day-to-day operations. You can find silicone in a variety of products, medical devices and components that doctors, nurses and even surgeons rely on in order to take care of their patients. Because of its ideal properties, silicone is often used in implantable medical devices. Common examples include artificial joint implants, heart valves, pacemakers, neurotransmitters and even aide in surgical reconstruction. The durability of silicone allows these long term implantable medical devices to stay inside of the human body for up to 30 days or longer.
Silicone can also be found in short term medical devices as well as disposable components. Short term devices with silicone are good for 29 days or less and must be removed and discarded. Disposable silicone components are regularly used in surgery and include connectors, sealing systems, stoppers, suture sleeves and manifolds.

Bypass – Must It Be Done With An Actual Vein?
I understand that when a person has a heart attack that it can be
attributable to a clogged artery(s) not allowing blood to easily travel.
Furthermore that, one solution to this problem is to remove a piece of
vein from one’s leg and to use it to bypass the clogged area of the artery.
My question is, for this type of procedure is it necessary to use an
actual piece of vein for the bypass or is it possible to use a tube
made of some other material such as plastic or silicone?
I did a Google search and saw no references to anything other than using a vessel from you. Sure would be nice if we could using something plastic or silicone to replace damage arteries and veins. Think of how great that would be for people suffering from arteriosclerosis and peripheral vascular disease! But in a quick search, it doesn't look like that is available, or if it is, it's not common practice.
